Tunisia has added another exceptional destination to the international tourism map: the Dahar Geopark has officially joined the network of UNESCO Global Geoparks. This major recognition, a first for the country, highlights a unique region in southeastern Tunisia and confirms its potential in the fields of geotourism, sustainable tourism, and outdoor activities.

With this designation, Dahar becomes the first UNESCO Global Geopark in Tunisia and the third in Africa. Led by the National Mining Office (ONM), this recognition celebrates several years of collaborative work carried out with institutions, local stakeholders, and partners committed to promoting this extraordinary region.
The Dahar in Tunisia has been designated a new UNESCO Global Geopark

The Dahar Geopark spans a vast area of southeastern Tunisia, between the governorates of Gabès, Médenine, and Tataouine. It brings together a remarkable diversity of landscapes, geological formations, topography, and heritage sites, while offering a glimpse into the deep history of the Earth and the communities that live there. This region thus combines geological richness, troglodyte villages, ksour, living traditions, and local expertise into a single experience of discovery. The destination currently highlights 43 geosites, as well as cultural itineraries, outdoor experiences, and a tourism offering built around authenticity and the transmission of traditions.

Beyond the designation itself, this international recognition opens new avenues for regional development, tourism appeal, and Tunisia’s visibility among travelers seeking destinations with a strong sense of identity. It also confirms the country’s ability to foster a sustainable tourism offering rooted in nature, culture, exploration, and engagement with local communities.

This success is part of a long-term initiative led by the National Mining Office (ONM) with technical and financial support from its partners, notably the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs of the Swiss Confederation (SECO) and Swisscontact, which have supported the project’s development as part of Destination Dahar.
With the Dahar Geopark, Tunisia is more than ever asserting its place among destinations that combine heritage, adventure, and sustainability.
